Schedule Change

Looks like North Warren Friday baring something crazy. Saturday's game vs Hamilton West has been postponed due to a Mercer County Tournament game.   Depending on how we do Friday we will play either a HWS game if we win Friday or Academy of the New Church Monday at home.

Coach T

Stats through 11 games

I have not yet figured a good way go get an excel spread sheet up here.. so I'll try this.....

Goals for 108 goals against 99 = 9 goals per game.  This way too many but we turn the ball over a lot, and spend more time on the defensive end then we should. Nice balance on scoring.

A win is a win in our 4 game week

Click here to view these pictures larger

It might not have been as pretty as I would have liked , but after a good hard rain, some 30 mph winds, and a lightning barrage to make Odin proud- we got our win against Princeton Day.

The game had some interesting aspects - Chris Fennell rounded up 21 ground balls and scored 2 goals (9g 3a) while freshman Sean Hogan  managed to pump in 2 goals.  Mike Rogers, (14g, 5a) steady all year had 2 -2 while Adam Kendzulak (23g,12a) led all scorers with 3-3.

Looking forward a win today vs Newton should get us another shot at North Warren, to be quickly followed by Hamilton West Saturday morning.

Again thanks to Donna Rogers for some great photo's which can be seen here.

DV 8 Pennington 7

With 2:34 seconds to go in the game midfielder Brandon Case scored his second goal breaking a 7-7 tie to give our Terriers the victory.  Coach T also gives a big thumbs up to sophomore Josh Jansen for his hard work, poise, and smart decision making he used to ice the game.

Thanks to Donna Rogers for the photos

3-1 - Thoughts after Blair

Well we are 3-1.  Against teams with a 5-16 record.  We have scored 68 goals and are leading the state in goals per game.  Yet we have given up 37 which is way too many. (120 teams are playing better defense then we are) We have only met our 6 goals or less benchmark once.  Thursday is WWPBS - a very talented squad (4-1) with a 91.8 power ranking.  Ours has dropped to 84.54.  which would favor WWPBS by 7. S what will we do about it?

If we play great D, make some saves, get our shots and shoot well I believe we can win, but we are going to have to put our best effort yet toward it. Upset wins by Del Val boys lacrosse squads are pretty rare, so maybe we are due.

2-1

So we are off and running.  I must say the team has me feeling pretty good - but a little nervous.  We have some real tests in the next 2 weeks and these are games that will make or break our season.  With focus, some commitment, good shooting and improved D these are games we can win.  But lets enjoy Saturday, watch some good lacrosse and hopefully get inspired to find it in our selves to keep on improving.

Captains

We have selected four captains for the 2010 campaign
Kyle Herter, Adam Kendzulak, Colin O'Such, and Brandon Case.

Worst thing about the season so far......

Every time daddy leaves the house with a lacrosse stick or his lacrosse jacket someone decides to cry........
But I'm pretty popular when I show up again.......

Weather

If there is one thing you can count on it is that spring weather will seldom be kind to a lacrosse team.  I love to play on grass, but it's tough this time of the year.  I give the team a lot of credit 50+ guys in the new gym is a tight squeeze....  So in our first week of practice we saw 3+" of rain, a foot of snow melt,

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY NJ HAS ISSUED A
* FLOOD WARNING FOR... ... HUNTERDON COUNTY IN NORTHWEST NEW JERSEY.........* UNTIL 245 PM EDT SUNDAY
* AT 143 AM EST NUMEROUS SMALL STREAMS THROUGHOUT THE AREA ARE RUNNING HIGH IN RESPONSE TO SEVERAL INCHES OF RAIN ON SATURDAY. THE AREAL FLOOD WARNING FOR THIS AREA ISSUED SATURDAY AFTERNOON HAS THEREFORE BEEN EXTENDED INTO SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
A FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR HAS BEEN REPORTED. STREAM RISES WILL BE SLOW AND FLASH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED. HOWEVER...ALL INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS IMMEDIATELY.

The grounds crew did manage to get 2 fields lined up for us.  We scrimmage next Monday.
I told the team if I won Powerball / Mega Millions that I'd donate us a turf fieldThen I confessed to a few of them that the lottery was a tax on people who are bad at math.  The one concession is that the first hot day in May - turf fields will swelter while our patch of weedy lawn will be cool, lush and green.

Founders Dinner

We are off- and it's been a pretty good start.  We had our first ever Founders dinner with the girls program and guest speaker and Del Val Lacrosse Founder Brent Kephart.  Brent delivered an inspired speech and Uncle Scott's Steakhouse catered dinner for 95. It was a great opportunity to reflect on where we are, how we got here and where we are going as a program.  Brent gave a gift of locker magnets to each member of the team and team parents helped to serve and baked desert.

PWG

Parents working group- One of the best ideas to come out of last night was the suggestion that we form a parents working group.  Keeping DV Boys Lax rolling is a big job and to be honest there are a lot of ties I could use some help.  So I'd like to form a parents group.  There are lots of things they could do, the least of which is be a sounding board for me.  I'm sure this will help keep the lines of communication open.  If you interested please get in touch.

Coach Testa

Buddy System

A new idea- The best part about being head coach is that you can make changes - so one change we will make is to institute a buddy system.  Each Varsity upperclassman will get to choose a freshman to mentor.  I'll leave how that done up to the kids to see what they come up with but the  simple request will be to make sure that the freshman is a better Lacrosse player at the end of the year then they were when we started.  I'm hoping this helps build us up as a team, and create a sense of community, brotherhood, and belonging.  This is about wining lacrosse games but not all the winning starts on the field.

Eve of the Season Post

It's been a very busy last 2 weeks.  On 2/22 and 2/23 we held a coaches clinic for the Chargers staff.  Last night was the first ever Del Val Lax Social.  The event was very well attended, it's amazing how many people took the time to show up on a rainy march night.  Coach Alan won the district Hoops tourney.

A special thanks to Bill Dixon for hosting last night and MC'ing the lacrosse trivia game.  I got to speak to a lot of great people and I'm looking forward to getting underway.  Our playbook is almost complete, the new hats are done, and the tee shirts will be printed for next week.  Big City Classic tickets are ordered and we now have over 20 freshman signed up to play lacrosse.

Shooting

One thing we need to do better as a team is shooting
One of the best  offensive teams in all college ball is Salisbury.  So we will try to do what they do.  Notice the pace, and the high number of touches- with both hands.

Attack and Middies should watch these videos HERE look under Salisbury Shooting Drills.

Chargers Newbies & HS Meeting

Last night at LDW school in Alexandria I got to help out with the Chargers new player orientation- which was for the 3rd grade team and and new players joining the program.  The numbers were great and it was nice to see some many young kids looking to play the nation's fastest growing sport. Coaches Donnelley, Kephart, Niebur, and Perez did a great job presenting.

At the High School level I was happy to see we have the return of several players who had been away from the program.  As a coach I want to everyone who plays as a freshman to graduate out of the program as a senior. Right now the program looks to have just over 40 players and are still rounding up guys here and there..  In the future I'd like to get closer to 60, but we have solid cores in each grade and from this we will build a successful program.

COACH T

Tee Shirts & Hats

Everyone at the kick off meeting received a tee shirt ad form.  This is a big part of fund raising for the year, and if successful will allow us to pay for things like the Big City Classic.  I'd like to close down the ad solicitation the next 2 weeks or so.  If you want to get a message on the shirt the time is now.

I met with Mrs. O'Such and John Brogan at Legends design today to nail down ideas for hats.  We have settled upon a crossed sticks and terrier paw design.  The team hat will be blue while the hat for fans and supporters will be white with a blue brim.  The team will be "earning their hats"- that is you get your hat when you have sold all your tee shirts, and handed in shirt money.  Hats for fans will be $15 and will be done in time for the event at Uncle Scotts.

CHANGES

One of the best things about being a new head coach is that it gives you a great opportunity to make changes.  So here are a few I plan to make.

  • We will have a printed playbook of what we are going to run and what you need to know.
  • Were going to have a team manager, She is already signed up and raring to go.
  • The HS staff and the Charger staff are going to work much more closely to make sure we have smart, motivated lacrosse players entering the system.
  • We will vote for next years captains at the end of the season, players leaving the program will have a chance to shape what follows.
  • I plan to work very hard to give the guys who want to play at the next level the chance to do that.
  • I have eliminated the  Parent/Coach Communication Pamphlet - I'm all about feedback.
  • I'm considering tunes at practice, as long as Nicky Ward is not the DJ!

One of the best ways to improve your lacrosse is to watch it played by the best.  School Board willing, and with proper attention to fund-raising DV Boys Lacrosse will have an opportunity to watch some of the best lacrosse this side of  NCAA Championship Weekend.  Once again the BIG CITY CLASSIC is being played right here in NJ.  As an added bonus it will be played in the new Meadowland's Stadium.  A big thanks to Andrew N. and the Del Val Chargers Folks for helping us nail down seats.

My First Post- Our teams 1 rule for the year

I'm sure I'll someday regret this whole exercise, but what the hey.....Welcome to my Lacrosse Blog.

This past weekend Jan 15 - 17 Coach Alan and I were able to attend the US Lacrosse Convention in Baltimore Maryland. Lou Holtz was the keynote Speaker. And some great coaches presented and demonstrated. I picked up a lot, and as a team there is a lot we can use.

I have been thinking of ways to try and improve our team rules but maybe it might just be best to borrow something from Coach Holtz.

So to keep it simple, the Boys Lacrosse team will have one rule. School rules will apply but we will only add one more to the mix.

“Do right. Do your best. Treat
others as you want to be treated."

Lou Holtz

I think that will get us through the year.

Coach T
